The 2009 Super 8 Festival

The 2009 festival took place on Mill Lane in the heart of the University district and in sight of the River Cam and comprised a programme of more than 98 short films from around the world shown over four days!

With more than 60 World, International, European and UK Premieres, our competition and panorama programmes showed the best films originated on the brilliant Super 8 format.

More than 25 filmmakers from across Europe joined the festival for a great four days of networking and films.

Highlights include a two-day filming and processing workshop by German director Dagie Brundert http://wabi-sabi-in-super8.blogspot.com , the world premiere of the feature film ‘Love Suicides’ by David Teague and a nostalgic local programme called Cambridge memories.

Brick Lane Memory (Jason Edwards, UK)
Audience Prize:
The Penalty Box (Arthur Franck & Oskar Forsten, Finland)
Best UK Film:
Code Grey (Rob Wickings, UK)
Development Prize:
Moving On (Erin Celeste Weisgerber, Canada)
Best Cinematography:
Rainy Day (Andres Victorero Rey, Spain)
Best Sound:
Who's Afraid of Ghosts (Amson Mak, Hong Kong)

3 special mentions were also given for:

  • The Time Machine (Paul Stevenson, UK)
  • The Golden Beach (Miklos Csoka, Hungary)
  • Dir Schneider Krankheit (Javier Chillon, Spain)

The 2008 Super 8 Festival

In 2008, the second Cambridge Super 8 Festival was a hugely successful event with more than 88 films screened in 4 competitive programmes and 2 non-competitive programmes.

All genres were represented (animation, fiction, documentaries and experimental film), showing the diversity of films submitted and versitility of the Super 8mm format.

The winners were;

Jury Prize for best film: "Shikashika" by Steve Hyde
Special Jury Prize: "The Two brothers" from "8 moments in Barcelona as seen by Johan Kramer"
Development Prize: "Dash Dot" by Ian Helliwell
The Best UK Film and Audience Prize: "The Flasher" by Magnus Irvin

In addition, two films received special mentions from the Jury, "Lunch" by Miklos Solyom and "Burnt Out and Inarticulate" by Ian Weake.

The 2007 Super 8 Festival

The First Cambridge International Super 8 Film Festival was held on the 1st and 2nd June 2007, in a big tent on Midsomer Common, Cambridge. The event was graced with baking hot weather and appreciative audiences.

In 2007 the acclaimed winners were:

Jury Prize: "A shift in Perception" by Dan Marceaux (Australia)
Audience Prize: "Foxy Lady in Winterland" by Dagie Brundert (Germany)
Development Prize: "Dear N." by Chantal Partamian (Lebanon)
Commendation Prize: "I Have Been Single Too Long" by Shane Davey (UK)
