Ian Helliwell audiovisual life performance - Friday June 20th 2008, 8pm - £5/£4

Bad Timing and Cambridge Super 8 present an unmissable opportunity to witness a live performance by this unique artist who has previously screened at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. There's a full supporting program drawn from the cream of the electronic and experimental music scene in Cambridge, with Jon Lloyd (aka Cockland) confirmed thus far. Expect to be amazed!

Ian Helliwell has been making truly astonishing, sublime Super 8 short films since early 1990's. His films have a dense psychedelic texture and each is accompanied by a sound track that he creates with electronic musical instruments he builds himself.

Ian Helliwell is heavily involved with the experimental film and electronic music community in Brighton and he was recently awarded the Development Prize at Cambridge Super 8 Film Festival 2008 for his short film 'Dash Dot'.

Helliwell has produced and developed music, Super 8mm films, electronic instruments, film and music programmes and light show projections for concerts and club nights. Self-taught, operating alone and without funding, he has worked with second hand and self built equipment, producing over 40 short films which have been screened as far afield Europe, USA, and Japan.

His long held interest in electronic sound led him to experiment with building and modifying 9 volt circuitry, and Ian has since gone on to construct a series of 'Hellitron' tone generators, each housed in a unique custom box, used to make the soundtracks to Super 8mm films.

In 2007 he designed and built an analogue synth, the 'Hellisizer 2000', and is currently making a 10 part series for radio called 'The Tone Generation', tracing the development of early electronica across the world.
